how to color in an object with a pattern of my choice???

ok, heres what i am trying to do. i have an object, lets say a circle...i want to fill it with a pattern of my choice, not just a specific color. how do i do this?

You will need to define a new pattern. Look at the URL (Pattern fill option)for an explanation:-

there are also tons of sample patterns in the layer features>pattern overlay, and if you don't like the defaults there are more available under (>) button in the drop down menu there
