I have been working on an SNMP problem with Nortel VPN router 1750. Does anyone know where I can download an OID table explaining what each value stands for. (a short description for each OID value)
I want to use SNMP to pull some specific information out of the VPN router 1750 box. However I dont know which OID value stands for what specific parameter.

I used java device manager to capture the SNMP packets and figured the OID values through the content of the packets for passport 8600 and ethernet routing switch.

Is it possible to do the same thing for the VPN router?

thanks

I think Net-SNMP is best tool for this kind of work.

You'll need the MIB files for your device, they can be found on Nortel's web site. You'll just need to stick them in the directory with the rest of Net-SNMP's MIBs and then a command something like this will give you what your looking for:
snmptranslate -m ALL -Td .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.8

Otherwise you can read through the MIB files themselves, they're in a standard ASN.1 format that isn't too bad once you get used to it... half the time a guy ends up fixing syntax mistakes in the MIB files anyway so its a good thing to know.

As explained by Anthony the SNMP MIBS explains the different OIDs. You can't use Device Manager to manage a Nortel VPN Router. If you have a large number of Nortel VPN Routers to maintain there is another product called VPN Router Multi-Element Manager, this is not a freebie like Device Manager.

You should be able to find the SNMP MIBS on the CD or enclosed in the latest version which can be downloaded from Nortel as a .zip or .tar.gz file.

You can also find a copy of the SNMP MIBS for the Nortel VPN Router (v7.05.300) here;

Cheers!
