Hi I have a laptop toshiba tecra 8000,that I need to do a clean install. I cant use the xp cd it doesnt boot up . so has any one used the ultimate boot cd , if so how do I do it ? it was working well running xp , then I messed it up trying to install linux on it , after hours of frustration I have come to the conclusion that a clean install has to be the only way
I can boot using the ubcd , so I need instructions on how to format it from there ?

do this:
i have done this many times with laptops and desktops.
get a win-98-se boot disk from here.
start your pc with this boot disk
run fdisk
delete partition(s)
create partition
turn off
turn on with the disk in
format your hd (format c:)
turn off
turn on with the disk in
choose "start with cd-rom support"
put xp cd in the cd-drive
navigate to d: or e: drive (d: drive may be your ram drive).
on the command prompt (dos) type d: to get to the cd drive(d: drive)
type cd i386
once there, type winnt.exe
this will start xp install process and will ask you if you want to create new partitions and/or ngfs or fat file system.

How do you create a ram drive under XP? I used to make serious use of a ram drive, but when I upgraded to XP (or maybe it was to Win98) I was no longer able to create a ram drive. I was never able to find any reference to or
assistance with this issue.

win98-se boot disk creates ramdrive. after booting with 98 disk, you can do c:, d:, and e:
you will notice that you only have d: or e: not both on you machine. if you do a dir on d: you will see that it's the ram drive with files in it. but this ramdrive is a small maybe 2mb drive that 98 uses to do its schlemiel. it's not an elaborate ramdrive.
that should get you going on the right path.

Why not? What does it do?

Is the CD the first device in your BIOS boot order?

ratzo - if it will boot ubcd but not xp cd, xp cd must be damaged. You can easily create a new one if you have access to a CD burner - eg, see
