How to check drivers for Win98?

I have a compaq laptop and I can not connectto the internet, because no connection is available or no dial tone is the result. It has been several months since the machine has been used. Afraif that the driver have been removed or not found, I am not sure. Please respond.

Assuming that the system is configured with a current ISP subscription, and it's dialing a working phone number to access the Internet, then open Device Manager and check for any problems with the modem.
If there are none, then do a diagnostics check on the modem in Control Panel.
If it fails the test, then either the modem or its slot may be bad.
