How do I edit label text in a report?
I can edit the fields ok but I cannot remember how to edit text - duh!

Keith

Keith,

In recent versions of VFP, you just double-click on the label to bring up the properties dialogue, from which you can edit the text of the label.

In earlier versions (6.0 and earlier, and possibly 7.0 and 8.0 as well), you have to click on the label icon in the report controls toolbar, then immediately click on the label itself.

Don't feel bad about not knowing that. It's not exactly intuitive. In fact, I used to use it as a quiz question on my training courses - not many people got it right.

Thanks Mike
I remember an earlier version where you had to press Ctrl-T. I don't remember ever using your suggestion to edit with but it works so I must not have edited any text.

Keith

Also, in VFP 9.0, highlight and Ctrl-E

just a another way i guess

When I try to change the font of the text I get the message, 'Printer Not Ready'.

Am I supposed to take this software seriously?

I suppose it is better than the standard Microsoft response to a problem - 'There was an Error'

Keith

That might be because you have no printer driver installed, or you had selected a printer-resident font that was not available on the selected printer.

I agree the message is unhelpful, but no worse than in many other development environments.

I have a number of Foxpro applications on this machine from which I can print with no problems, either in the .exe version or from within the dev environment. This particular application has several printing options, none of which work at the moment.
Could you suggest anything which may cause this problem?

Keith

There are 18 separate reports in this app which do not respond any more. I have recreated 1 of them and I can now print it out.
Any idea why they have suddenly become corrupted, having worked ok for a number of years and is it likely to happen again.

Did anything changed/happened since they were working for the last time?
Did you transfer/install them to another machine?
Did you install a new printer?
While I am not sure, something tells me this might be the case. I would suggest that you thoroughly back up your reports then take a look at faq184-581. I think, it might help solve your problem. (What version do you use? I am not sure this FAQ pertinent to VFP9.)

Well I must say a big thankyou for that.
We are back working at full capacity.

I was most concerned that this app was in big trouble. My client needs it up and running by tomorrow and discovering something like that during final testing did not do much for my confidence in Foxpro. I am not sure what has changed in the files but clearly something has. Is there any way of preventing the printer driver info from being put there in the first place?

Keith

Keith,

I am very glad it helped.
So what had happened is that you installed it on the client's computer, and it stopped working - after it was thoroughly tested on your development machine. Right?
You should have mentioned that.

Is there any way of preventing the printer driver info from being put there in the first place?
To tell you the truth, I don't know. I think, rather not.
But I seem to recall discussions that this problem was fixed in VFP9 - but I may be dreaming. I still have to use VFP6.

If you are using VFP 9.0, open the report in the report designer, untick the "Printer Environment" option in the Report menu, and save the report.

Stella,

No, it's not a dream. But, you know, I'm not convinced it's a permanent solution. I've seen cases where you deselect "Printer Enviroment", but it nevertheless does manage to save the settings at a later time.

I am using VFP6 and the problems have ocurred while still testing on my development machine. I don't really know how long there has been a problem. I have edited some of the reports over the last few days but only realised there was a problem when I tried to format the text.
I rarely print out hard copies here as I can view the preview to see if the formatting is correct. I just run off a few hard copies as a final test but I hadn't got that far before I realised there was a problem.

Once again, thanks for the help - I am sure it will not be the last time.

Keith

There is a bug in VFP9 report writer (don't know if this was fixed in SP2). If you change the font of any of the fields, the Printer environment got saved with the report.
