I have a system with ONLY an X-server running. (so no window manager at all)
I start it with the XFree86 command.
The resolution is 800x600 and I want it to be 1024x768.
I know about the file /etc/X11/XF86Config and I looked into
it. I think it is right. I actually copied the XF86Config file from my other hd that already runs X in 1024x768.
Still it doesnt change its resolution. I have the impression it just ignores the XF86Config file...
Any hints ?

Aha, found it.
When you start the X-server with XFree86, it does not use the /etc/X11/XF86Config file but the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file !
The /etc/X11/XF86Config file us used when you type in 'startx'.
Voila, problem solved.
