Hi Crystal experts,

My question is for CR 8.

I have a report that is pulling data from a SQL Server db on Server 1. I am moving this database to a new server - Server 2 - also changing the name of the database.
So both the server name and the database name have changed.

I built the original report on Server 1 by using the wizards/tools and referencing an ODBC Data Source that points to files on Server 1. (The VB program just uses the CRViewer to display the report).

Is there any way to modify the crystal report so it will pull data from the new ODBC Data Source (Server 2)...
or will I have to recreate the report from scratch?

Thanks for any suggestions. John

In your report, go to the Database menu and select Set Location. Click on the Set Location button and select the table in your new ODBC data source. You will see a message that reads, "Propagate server and database changes across tables with the same original information?" Select Yes. Click on Done.

I would also suggest that you verify the database after doing this to make sure that it's doing what it needs to.

I don't think that answered all of the question.

Part of the answer lies in your TNSNAMES.ORA file. Change THAT file's entry for your database to point to the correct HOST for the new database. That's where the SERVER ("host") is changed.

If you don't mind a third party utility, our new .rpt Inspector 2 Professional Suite now comes in two editions. One that supports CR5.x-CR8.5 and one that supports CR9.x. Everything else in the two editions is the same. Including support of a new "data source / database conversion and migration wizard" which allows you to select one or more reports and select multiple sources to a destination for set location, convert driver, verify database. And we support ODBC / OLE DB / Native DB2 / Native Informix / Native Oracle / Native SQL Server / Native Sybase.

Both editions are now available for a FREE 30-day trial download.

Thanks hilfy, DrWerner and SFLLC for your replies.

hilfy, I tried your suggestion - it encountered a problem - but it was 3 months ago and I dont remember the exact details.

DrWerner, I will change the .ORA file and post back.

SFLLC, I'm sure the utility is a good one, but I just don't want any more 3rd party tools. I'm moving toward fewer of those, not more.

Dont know why Seagate did not make it easier to point the CR to a different db/server.

Again, thanks to everyone.
John
