How to change photograph into a line drawing?

I am needing help in changing a photograph into a smooth line drawing.
I have used a photoshop method of selecting Filter>Photocopy and removing everything but the outline, nut the effect is too messy.
I am sure Illustrator colud help I just don't know how? Any ideas?
