Hello, I have been asked to do some renaming of teamsites etc. I know how to rename the Title - "Site Settings" - "Change site title and description" However this does not change the URL, is there anyway this can be changed eg

is given the title "Team 1" but I want to change it to Team12, how do I change the URL aswell to reflect the name change?

Also I have some Teams that are inside other teams that need to be moved back 1 level eg.

needs to become

Does anyone know how to do this without having to lose data, permissions etc?

TIA
Pete

Which product/version is this?

If it's MOSS 2007 I would probably approach this by using the STSADM utility. It is my understanding that this preserves all settings related to the site collection.

First export the site ([tt]stsadm -o backup -url -filename X:\blah.dat[/tt]).

Then import the site using the new URL ([tt]stsadm -o restore -url -filename X:\blah.dat[/tt]).

Once you are happy that the new site works correctly, you should be able to remove the original.

Note for the import part ([tt]-o restore[/tt]). If the web application that serves the new URL is connected to more than one content db, SharePoint will choose the target content db itself. I do not know how to override the choice.

I'm fairly new to SharePoint myself, so someone may come up with a more effective/efficient method.

Sorry forgot to add its MOSS 2003, ill look into the stsadm command to see if it supports 2003.

Cheers

Do you have Microsoft Office Sharepoint Designer 2007(SD07)? BTW you can DL a free trial Click Here

If you do...
1. Using SD07 Backup 2. Create a new site on the top level 3. When it asks you to choose a site template. don't and back up of the system
4. Using SD07 Restore the backup to the new address 5. All done :)

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.
