Hello!
I have an HP-UX 10.20 machine and I must change its IP address and name to do some maintenance. The new IP is in the same range than the old. I changed the IP in the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf archive, and changed the name using Sam. But when I exited session and tried to open a new one, it came out with an error (it couldn't connect with desktop). I changed again IP and name to the old ones and could open session again. ¿What I'm doing wrong? Thanks a lot.

Hi Monika,

netconf is indeed the file which hold the config info for the changes that you wish to make, however it is only read at boot time and used to for configuration. Thus the binding of the new addresss to the LAN card and the changing of the hostname will not be made until you reboot You will also have to consider DNS and external routing tables.

Regards

I would recommend using set_parms. This can be used to set an array of different network settings. Located in /sbin/ or a link in /etc/.

Best of luck..

Three things you NEED to do;
1. just edit netconf with an editor VI works fine. Edit the host name and IP address/es for your lan card/s. Save this file.
2. edit the /etc/hosts file make sure that your NEW host name and IP address are in the file. Save it. I have also seen an /etc/hosts file with only a plus sign + in it, that is supposed to allow all host names. If the machine can't resolve its host name you won't get the CDE to start.
3. REBOOT useing either the reboot command or shutdown -ry 0 from the dtpad to allow the changes to take effect.

You can use the other methods such as set_parms or sam but directly editing them is just as easy and a lot quicker.
