How to change hostname?

I want to change the hostname of my machine, but evidently, it's not as simple as just changing the name. I always end up locked out of dtterm, and having to reboot in safe mode.

What do I have to do to completely change the name of the machine, without causing other problems?

Please note: I have not yet configured my network settings for TCP/IP, (or anything else) as I don't to add that layer of difficulty before resolving this issue.

Thanks.

Have you tried using smit
Code:
smit hostname
has the option to change hostname.

Columb Healy

Yes, but that only changes the name - it doesn't resolve the hostname in ? other places...

What do you mean by "it doesn't resolve the hostname in ? other places..."?

Are you speaking of the hosts file?
Code:
smit hosts
Use the list and see if your "old" host name is still attached to your server's IP. This could be your problem but more info would help.

Yes, the loopback is still at the default "localhost"

How do I change it?

OK - then what do I have to do to get the hostname changed, without causing other system problems?

Whenever I use the "smit hostname" and change the hostname, (from localhost) I am unable to start any new processes, and end up having to logout, and login. When I login again, the desktop restarts in safe mode. After I change the hostname back to "localhost," everything is fine.

Ironically, I opened the hosts file, and changed the name there, and there is no problem, as I had before. However, I must also say, I have still not figured TCP/IP yet, either. (as I want to change the host name before setting this up)

You give the server a hostname while you are setting up your network connection, not before. Use smitty mktcpip, fill in the information, and everything will work fine.

OK, I will do this.

Question - which network interface do I want to use on AIX? (small network, DSL, firewall router)

I would start with en0 instead of et0. Why don't you post what you are trying to accomplish instead of giving us small bits of info?

From what I guess, you have an AIX box you need to get on your network and you've never done this before.

Questions:

1. Is this a new box?

2. If used, does it have TCPIP settings (address, hostname, hosts, DNS, etc.) from its old home?

3. What do you need to have as your settings for your network? Do not post answers to a-f in your reply.
a. Hostname
b. IP Address of server
c. Subnet
d. DNS server IP
e. Domain name (if you use DNS to resolve names on your local network, proabaly not)
f. Default gateway (router address for your IP range)

4.Are you going to have the server get IP via DHCP instead of specifying the above settings?

5.What OS level are you running? (Run the oslevel command)

6. What model are you running on?

7. Do you have a network admin who should know the answers to questions 3 and 4 that can help you?

You are almost correct in all regards. I've never SUCCESSFULLY done this before...

1. No. It is currently a local workstation.

2. No - fresh install. It came to me freshly refurb'ed.

3.

4.

5. 5200 -05

6. RS/6000 7044 170 400MHZ, 1GB, 36GB

7. No. Unfortunately, I'm learning a new trade - baptism by fire. (luckily, I own the business)

Hi solid7,

Looked at your website. I used to do solid modeling for Lockheed Martin on Catia some years back, getting your AIX server on a network is a lot easier :)

All a matter of perspective... I can do CAD design as easily as I can walk. It seems that crossing over from what I'm good at, to what I'd like to be good at, doesn't work so well. (what's that old saying about an old dog, new tricks?)

Well, maybe that's not true. But I'm certainly out of my element, and as much as I'd like to learn, I'm probably not starting out the right way.

Let's put it this way - I want to learn as much as I can right now, and as my business grows, I'll probably leave this stuff to the experts, and stick with what I do best. (which *IS* CAD design)

I certainly understand. CAD and System Administration are 2 different worlds. Did you get your workstation on the network yet?

No. But I did just send you an email to the address specified on your webpage.

Do you have the correct network cable to go from the 7044-170 to the router?

If you plug it in, does the LED next to the router port light up?

Also you might want to check if there is more than 1 network adapter port on the 170. Maybe you have to use en1 instead of en0 - or plug the cable in to another connector at the back of the 170.

do

lsdev -Ccadapter

at the command line prompt and see what ethernet adapters are available.

It seems that what my problem is right now, is that I have some sort of firmware issue with the router. The reason that I have been having so much trouble, is because my router is rebooting when the RS sends or receives info. It won't hold a stable connection.

Everything looks good, except for this issue. I'm in the process of replacing this router, when circumstances favor it. Until then, I'm stuck without this machine on the network.

Thank you to everyone who helped me with this topic. I really appreciate the time that you all have taken.
