We just purchased BE 8.6, and I want to be able to backup some network shares. The BE service account is the domain Administrator account, so permissions should not be a problem. But BE won't let me connect to a User Defined Selection so that I can backup any network shares. Do I need a BE Remote Agent for every machine on my network that hosts a share that I want to backup?! This would seem a little ridiculous. Hopefully, I'm just doing something wrong. Thanks for any help here.

You need to have remote agents installed for any Server that you are connecting to to backup shares. If you are backing up shares on workstations you should be fine.

Thanks for your reply. Do you happen to know how BE works with DFS roots and their underlying shares? Will a single remote agent work with a single DFS root, regardless of how many machines host it's folders? Thanks.

I believe that it should work fine, you would only need one remote agent.

Thanks again for your help. I have another question pertaining to Exchange 2000. I have installed the remote agent on our Exchange 2K server as well as the Exchange Agent on the BE server. However, the Exchange server's name is still grayed under Remote Selections. I guess I have to have a Remote Agent license in addition to the Exchange Agent license in order to backup Exchange databases?

Hi,

You need to have a remote agent license for all servers that you will be connecting to. This would include the exchange server.

I just went through all of this setup a month ago, so if you run into any problems just post back.
