Hi,

Can anybody please tell me how to backup the control file for Oracle 8.x when the database is open and is in archivelog mode. We are using backup exec and the job is set to not backup open files, so backup exec is skipping the control file.

There is no way to backup an open control file.
All you can do is create a file containing necessary instructions to create new control files.
Using

'Alter database backup control file to trace;'

'Alter system backup controlfile to <filename>' works for me

I have used backup exec before but not now. If I remember it right, there is an Oracle agent available for you to install so that you can backup open files. Ofcourse I may be wrong.
