Hello everyone.

is there a way to back up one single report before modifying. I am modifying trhu G.P. report writer. I know I can back up the reports dictionary but if someone else modifies another report then I will overwrite their chagne if i restore the reports dictionary. Any suggestions

Villica,

Navigate to Tools > Customize > Customization Maintenance. The resulting window will have all of your modified/custom reports listed. Select the report in question and then Export. This will create a package file with the definition of the selected report, providing a backup of that individual report only.

I usually recommend to my clients that anyone doing a lot of report customizations, have their set file modified to point to a local dictionary rather than to the production/shared one. They can then just export out their latest creation and import that one alone into production, instead of moving an entire dictionaly back and forth and risking overwriting other modifications.

Lyle's advice perfect.

I actually prefer to use local customisation dictionaries for all workstations and not use a shared reports.dic at all.

You can then use a synchronisation script on login to copy a "master" reports.dic to each workstation. This will decrease network traffic and avoid corruption issues which can happen with shared dictionaries.

David,

Thanks :)

I actually prefer individual dictionaries as well. Perhaps a little more administration, but well worth it in less issues overall. Synchronisation is not hard to achieve using your script idea.

thanks Lyle, I will give this a try. I don't think I ever done this but it sounds like a good ide.

Hi one last question if I may

here is one I plan to do. Will this be correct
1 export the report
2 modify dynamic.set to point to c:\ reports.dic
3 import the report above into the local dictionary
4 once done modifyng, export report again
5 change dynamics set to point to server dictionary
6 import report

I am just learning this stuff, the change I need to make is just a layout.

Please let me know if the above steps are correct
