How to avoid text deletion when editing a cell with text in it?

I know we can use double click to set a cell into an edit mode. I wonder if there is a way to change cell to edit mode if we type using keyboard. What it does by default is deleting the cell. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hit the F2 key to put the cell into edit mode, same as a double-click.
