I'm not clear on what it is that you want to accomplish. Do you simply want to know how to backup Outlook data so it isn't lost in a virus attack or hard drive crash?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Hi mattjurado,

I want the simplest way to automate the back up of Outlook email & some other user directories.

Simple PC networks can get by cloning the PC drives & keeping them available for restoration, then doing daily backups of directories using Syncback type utilities w/o the cost of using Acronis, or V2i Protector (now Norton Ghost). When they get more sophisticated, I can upgrade their backup methods.

I restored a drive just that way yesterday. Worked very well. I even use a USB drive to copy again the files for off-site storage.

Testing is vital. I agree. When I restored some user data with the software vendor's explicit directions (pricey legal software), a lot of data did not restore. Guess who's going to get called tomorrow?

Thanks, Dave

You can use xcopy batch files to copy the files/directories you want. You won't need any third party softwares, just note what you want to copy, then create an xcopy script to copy those targets to whatever source drive(s) you want.
