Fellow Geeks,

I've got a lab of 20 Windows 2000 boxes. I have two accounts on these computers in which the "general" population can access the desktop. One is a User account and the other is a guest account.

The user account is really when a user logs into the domain controller and on the local workstation they just have user priviledges. The guest account resides on the local computer.

The problem I'm having is we purchased a bunch of licenses for ahead Nero so we can run it in our lab. When a user logs in and fires it up it says the user needs "Burn Priviledges". I've gone into Computer Management and gave Users and Guests Control over the CD-RW. But it seems to make no difference. I don't want to upgrade users to Power users and have them mess up my lab.

I am hoping someone out there knows how to fix this problem. To me it seems weird how a user can save to the floppy and to the zip drive but can't burn CD's. It almost feels like a Nero thing.

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced,

Besides the CD-RW drive, you also need to give the accounts full control over the TEMP directory that Nero uses, plus the Nero program folder under Program Files. After that, you should be good to go.

Hi cdogg,

Ok, I gave Users and Guest full control of the Nero directory in the Program Files. It creates its own temp directory within its program directory and I simply had permissions from the parent object cascade down to the child objects. So the temp directory should inherit the permissions of the Nero directory. I still get the same message. I should have posted what it said word for word, here is what the message says word for word:

Under Windows NT4/2000 burn rights are required by Nero to access cd recorders and cd-rom/dvd-rom drives. Please ask your system administrator for a permission to use Nero.

Because of this message, it led me to believe User and Guest didn't have sufficient privileges to use the CD-RW so I tweaked that in Computer Management. Maybe it is a Nero thing? Not a Win2k thing. Maybe there is a place in Nero I need to tweak?

Thanks,

Nero has a patch that fixes this issue. I received it from techsupport@nero.com.
The patch is called "NeroBurnRights".

alubken,

Thanks alot for that info. I will contact them asap.

There is a work around for this issue. If you single click the Nero icon, hold down the shift key and then right click the icon, you will see the option to "run as". You can go into this setting and run the Nero program as a local admin.

I found a link on Nero's website that will let you download the NeroBurnRights and it worked fine after that. Thanks guys!
