How to add reference no to items on the report? 1

I am trying to add reference numbers (1,2,3,etd.) to items listed on a report. The numbers can not be ID numbers, because the report is a result of a query and not every item with the oridinal ID is listed. The reference numbers are only for people to coordinate their reading.
So how can I go about adding a report based reference number?
Any hints are highly appreciated!

Put a text box on your report in the DETAIL section. For the control source, put =1. Make the RUNNING SUM property be OVER GROUP or OVER ALL, whichever works for you.
