I am a rookie to routing.
I have an existing network with 140.1.2._ /24 address being used on all the devices.
All these devices are connected to a single switch.
I have a router to access the internet
I come in and install into this network a device with a private ip,192.168.22.34 /24
I plug this device into the same switch the 140.1.2._ devices are on.

Would I need to add a special table in the router to allow devices on the 140.1.2. network
able to connect to the device at 192.168.22.34?
Would I need to add the device directly to another router ethernet port; and then add a
route entry?
Would it make any difference if I didnt use a private ip but a ip in a different subnet
from 140.1.2._ ?
Would there be any reason not to add this device into the existing subnet 140.1.2??

Thank you.

All of this depends on what kind of switch you are using. What make/model is the switch?? Depending on whether or not it is capable of running multiple VLANs will determine if you can use your existing router as what is referred to as a router-on-a-stick. Also, why are you using addresses from 140.1.2.x/24 internally??

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

Why can't you just change the IP address of the new device to match your current addressing scheme? Does it need to be on a separate subnet?

To add to what unclerico said, when I started my job here they were using a single 209.177.219.0/24 subnet internally.
