how to access mysql databse through c program in linux 1

Like the topic says I need to learn how to access a mysql database through c programs on a linux box. I've done a little research but I was wondering what any other peoples opinions on the "best" or the "easiest" way to do it is. I've heard of ODBC and I've seen some possible libraries that people have written. The SQL book I have also talks about embedded sql code, but I don't think this is the best way to go. If anybody can point me at some code to see and give me some opinions I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
