A friend of mine briefly told me about a problem he´s having.
Correct me if I´m missing something here or If I´ve understood this wrong.

He has a netgear RT314GE, a router/gateway, with built-in switch capabilities (4 ports?).

He has a adsl connection to the internet. The adsl-modem is connected to the router/switch.

The one connected to the switch accesses internet by giving the routers ip (assigned by the ISP´s dhcp) as default gateway.

The routers uses NAT to translates all local traffic to internet traffic, making all local users appear as the router on the internet?

He´s planning on setting up a linuxserver on his LAN.
How can he access this from the internet?
He wants to be able to telnet to it, as well as running different services on it. like a counter-strike server, ftp.

The ip´s of the LAN are assigned by the dhcp in the netgear router/switch. 192.168.0.1-254 I believe.

thanks in advance. /Sören

Go out to netgear and see if they support static nat maps; then you will have to run
routed or another dynamic routing daemon ,
or write your own route script for inclusion
in init or rc.d.
I do not believe that netgear offers the
pat or static nat however..

I visited him last night.
The netgear router was quite fancy. It had some firewall capabilities for one thing.

It also had some filter that could be changed.
for example. If someone sent data to [ip of router]:23 you could direct that information to any computer on the LAN.
telnet is therefor not a problem anymore.

We also directed port 80 21 27015 and more to the linux-machine. /Sören

Good deal..it had pat, thats a decent product..
