How to access internal database through internet?

Hi, every one,
We have an internal database in a local network. Now, we want to access the database at another city through the internet safely. How can I set up the system and databse?
Our os is redhat7.1 and database is mysql 3.23.36. We use JSP and tomcat.
Any help will be appreciated.
