how the floppy drive is accessed

Hi,
Does anyone know exactly how the floppy access is done with regards to volcheck. I have found that if floppys are manually ejected without issuing the 'eject floppy' command, that the floppy names remain in the /floppy directory, and after many occurences of this, the floppy drive becomes inaccessible. What can you do to prevent inaccessiblity?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
