How t make a poster frm a lot of combined photos

I've been trying to make a poster like one of star wars where thousands of photograms were combined to do a new image. how is the best way to do that? I've searched for any progs or tips in google unsuccessful.

If I were doing such a thing, I would use Corel Photopaint or Adobe Photoshop, or another raster based application where you have control to erase parts of layers and the ability to blend, fade, etc of existing images. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I'm trying to pixelate the image (corel 10). I'm doing a mozaic to get the image divided in small squares and then finding an image with the same tint for each square. But it's a hard work. Maybe someone knows another way or prog to do this.
