We wish to install Symantec's Control Center on a machine running Terminal Services in Application mode. Symantec says that if we disable TS in app mode then we can install Control Center (I think)...

Our question is: we have TS set up in app mode, and it works just fine now... we REALLY don't want to monkey with TS... but if we run the simple procedure below to disable TS in app mode, will we be able to EASILY re-install TS in app mode? Will we lose user logins, permissions... ANYTHING? Will we have to re-do anything with licenses?
------------------------
Enabling and Disabling Terminal Services on Windows 2003 Server
To enable/ disable Terminal Server, go to Manage Your Server > Add or Remove a Role > Terminal Server.

To enable/ disable Remote Desktop Administration, go to Control Panel > System > Remote.
-------------------------

If it is to disable users from logging on to TS, you can issue the CHANGE LOGON /DISABLE command which will disable any further logons to TS or you can just disable remote desktop. If it is only to install the application in order to be supported under TS, install the app through add/remove programs. I don't see why you have to disable TS in order to install this application.

No, it's not just to diable users from logging in... Symantec says that their installation doesn't work if TS is in APP mode... only in RDA mode... we want to be able to "flip" it to RDA mode just long enough to get Symantec Control Center installed... then put TS back into APP mode... and I'm fearful that doing so using the instructions above might make me start over with TS in APP mode... licensing, user logins, etc., etc....

Does Symantec confirm that it will continue to work once the machine is flipped back to Application Mode? Or could it be that their setup is not compatible with a computer running in App mode?

Well, that's the million dollar question...

What is Symantec Control Center? Is that the actual product name? I cannot find it on Symantec's site.

SCC is a tool that is used to manage Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition... from SCC you can schedule scans, virus updates, program updates... all from one machine... hopefully, the server, in our case.

SCC is actually an MMC snap in. I don't see a conflict between the two, but I have not tried this myself. A quick search across the web doesn't reveal people stating this is a problem either.

If, IF you try this, my advice is to log all users off and disable their ability to log on. Then enter install "mode" and run the Symantec install in this manner. It would be even better if you had a test system setup with TS and attempted this prior to doing so live.

Well, I found this note on Symantec's site for Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition v10.0:

Note: If you are installing the Symantec System Center on a computer that runs a supported Windows server operating system, you must first disable Terminal Services. You can re-enable Terminal Services after installation. Terminal Services (TermSrv.exe) prevents a successful installation. You can disable it from Task Manager or the Services dialog box in Administrator Tools.

Yep... I saw that too... it IMPLIES Terminal Services in RDP mode... I think if you have TS in APP mode you can't disable it in Task Manager, or in Services... you've got to "remove" it under Computer Management... and that's my question: if we do that in Computer Management, what will I be facing when we're ready to re-enable Terminal Services in APP mode?

Hmmm...why do you say it implies RDP mode? I would read that as implying APP mode since I don't see how RDP mode TS could cause an installation problem.

I'm basing that on looking at two different Terminal Server machines... one has TS in APP mode, and we CAN'T disable it there or stop the service (without going into Computer Mangement)... and the other has TS in RDP mode and we CAN stop the service in Services....

Since you purchased the product you should be able to contact Symantec directly for answers to your question. You can put the server in install mode by using the add/remove programs to install the app. More than likely Symantec is wanting this so that the application drop all of its files in the proper directory by forcing an install from the local console. Some apps do not install correctly through a terminal session regardless of app mode or admin/remote desktop mode.
