We installed a Seagate tape drive using Travan NS-20 tapes about 18 months ago. Kicked off with 10 tapes, rotated fortnightly. Now I am down to 6 tapes as the others have read errors. This seems excessive as 30-odd uses per tape is not much. Is this normal or could it be dirty heads? The tapes that have been put aside as duds tested 'bad' 2 or 3 times, not just once. System" Win2000 Server and NTBackup.

I am cautious of using Travan backups for crucial backups. When did you last clean the driver ? You should do it weekly.

Bill.

[adopt shamefaced expression]...haven't cleaned it at all since installation. Will now do so. Cleaning aside, why caution with Travan backups? Are there better tape systems? On the odd occasion when I have had to restore a file for a user it's worked OK. System is 20 user LAN.

When I think of backups, I usually deal with high-end products. My primary backup device is a 100GB/200GB LTO tape drive, which writes at 15-30MB/second.

I'd rather go with a nice digital media (4mm/8mm/DLT/etc..) - it just feels better to me. I need higher duty cycles than I'm prepared to trust to a Traven drive.

Bill.
