how much usage does VPN incur at min

Hi,

I have something to ask and hope anyone here might be able to help me here. Once the VPN connection has been established between home and the office, how much broadband usage does it incur at minimum? by minimum, i mean when there is no activities of downloading or uploading files in the traffic whatsoever. I believe it'd still stay connected unless we tell it to disconnect by dropping the connection done on the VPN router.

My understanding is that it doesn't incur any usage. correct me if i'm wrong.

One way to find out on a broadband connection is to connect to the VPN, and from the remote site fire up a web browser and go here...

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

and run a test. Then, compare it to a normal speed test from that location, and you'll see the difference.
Depending on what kind of VPN you have and what kind of encryption it does will depend on how processor-intensive the VPN is on the routers(s).
