We have a small network, (around 20 computers), and are about to install a file server and some sort of backup solution. Our main goal from the backups are to get them off site. My problem comes with sizing issues. To back up our 300 GB file server(not all utilized now, but will be) we'd probably have to use an autoloader of some sort, a bit pricey for my taste. I thought about backing up to hard drives and taking them off site, but i don't know how feasible that is either. Can Veritas help me break the backups into smaller jobs and then use two or three 80GB tapes over two or three nights? Or am i going to have to suck it up and get the tape loader.

You could presumably configure several one-day-per-week jobs with BackupExec, Monday being Folder1 that usually has 40GB of data, Tuesday being Folder2 that usually has 60GB of data, and so on, and then the 5GB or so of very important data is a part of every backup job. Depends on how critical the timeliness of the data is that you're backing up, against how much you want to spend.
