Next week whilst on half term i'm going to load stan 2008 64bit server to new machine i have had delivered today.

it has 6 x 400GB (mirrored) HD's, how much space should i allocate to the front C:\ drive do you think?

it will soon take over as DC in a 2003 domain with xp/vista. the second set of mirrored HD'S is for programs and shared folder were as the 3rd set is for student and teachers folders. I feel that 400 GB is to large for C: (50 / 100 / 150 /200)

many thanks

Well it depends on what you will be installing on it i suppose most of my 2003 servers have 20Gb C drives and non of them are over 12Gb usage. 2008 Server requires more space but not significantly more i'd aim for 30 - 40Gb unless you will be installing lots of apps or terminal server on the C drive.

I have an 80 GB C: drive on my 2008 machine, but mainly because the server came with an 80GB drive and I added 1TB of additional storage for apps and VMs. I could have gone smaller, and if I did I would have gone with something in the 40GB range. You want to make sure that you have room to install all of those Windows updates and catch the features that require a lot of disk space (like the integrated database that you can install).

I've been putting all my OS's on a mirrored 74GB pair of drives...because that's the smallest big blue provides now.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.

Yes i have been reading about those updates and pps running out of space on there vista machines. was thinking of installing WUS on the next part of the partion so my thoughts at moment is 400 - (100/100/ so far)

Windows 2008 shouldn't have any issues detecting large drives. I'm using 500GB drives on mine.

Any chance the drives were previously partitioned?

You have a point there think ill open the case and pop a drive out. however i did open the case the other day and wondered why 4 drives are one shape and 2 the same (thickness) i suspect i'm going to find different sizes.

After big apps to me for not supplying the right size hard drives i got 6 x 500GB drives instead of 6 x 400 . it shows up as 47**** so i went for a 70GB size front drive mirrored for C:\

Thanks for all your comments its loading as we speak 2 weeks late:(

Don't load WSUS on your domain contoller. It requirest IIS and IIS and domain controllers are a bad security practice.

Well I have found that you need to make sure you turn the Hibernation off / change your power settings to Performance. If Hibernation is on it will create a large file on your root drive.
