i have a small network in our office-(8 wkstations) each with a network drop and a voice port off our norstar mics- now we require an extension of that network and phone system to our newly aquired office next door- how do i go about connecting the two networks and addding phones over there ? my first guess is to run copper over there for the phones( to a secondary tel room ) and fiber to a hub and secondary data field? does this sound like the right solution? or can/should i extend the voice on the fibre also- and how many strands would be req'd?- distance between two sites is aprox 900' and we own the property between. thanx in advance

MCK extenders will work to extend fiber with the MICS.

You would need 2 strands for each module (ie digital station, maybe analog station module).

Plus at least 2 strands for each Data application.

I would recommend, with the info you gave, to go with no less than a 12 strand but might lean more toward a 24 strand not knowing what the new office will be using in the future or other technologies (or if you might have to use part of that building as disaster recovery or backfeeding.

The additional strands are minimal cost compared to having another cable trying to be installed down the road in a conduit that will then have existing cable.

If underground,I would also recommend a minimum of a 4" conduit for telecommunications only & install the fiber in an innderduct. Possibly a handhole inbetween. Dedending on the route & number of transistions you may require more. Have your experienced outside plant telcom cabling people involved prior to any conduit installation to bring up any other recommendations (electricains & mechanical contractors don't always install the conduits with the thoughts of installing fiber & for making sure it will be able to add cabling easily into it in the future. Make sure it is installed with long radius sweeps & the conduit installation contractor installs a nylon pull line. Any cabling contractors should be required to replace the pull line with 1/4" POLY ROPE after each pull.

1 pair per data module? is that 1pr per pc or 1 pair per 24port hub?

1 pair of fiber for voice, one pair for network, the rest for spare/future applications and redundancy on the network and phones.

I would agree in pulling a minimum 12 strand fiber, 24 strand would be better. It is cheaper to pull one cable with 24 strands now than it would be to come back later and pull a second cable.

In interconnecting the buildings, I would install managed switches on either end, connected via two pairs of fiber and load balance for redundancy.

Just my $0.02 worth, in today's network environment, I would move away from hubs and to a switched network.
