How many processes can a Oracle 8i Listener support? I realized there are variables to this question such as server hardware configuration and such, I just need a reasonable guess.

Our environment has 20+ Java applications accessing our database and performing selects, inserts, and updates to server tables. We currently have only one listener created for the instance. I am concerned that there may be a performance issue. If someone can provide some guidelines I would appreciate it.

Regards.

John,

Think of the Oracle LISTENER as the maître d' of a restaurant. The maître d' does not serve each of the guests he welcomes to the restaurant; s/he simple matches up a customer with their server. Although a rush of customers can cause a bit of a wait for any one customer, since there is relatively little time that the maître d' spends to "introduce" the customer to its server, the wait should not be great. We have dozens of sessions attempting to connect simultaneously and no one complains about the connection time.

I hope this helps. Let us know.
