How many photos can I add to PS Elements 3 slideshow?

I need to set up a slideshow with approx. 500 images in it and would like to use Elements 3 to do it. The images currently total approx. 4 GB of space but once done the slideshow will be a manageable size to upload to my website. I'm concerned that my computer will choke when I open all of these files at one time in order to begin creating the slideshow. Is that the way to do it, or do I create the slideshow in portions and add files along the way?
