How many people can connect

I was wondering how to test how many users can connect to the database and also how to monitor the performance?

To force load testing on a server I will generaly do some batch file writting, and launch a series of batch files that repetly log into the SQL Server and all run the same bit of code. It's not the most scientific method but it's basically free, and it's a decent simulation of a group of people using the system at the same time.
