I was a repair/cable tech for SBC in the chicago area and got laid off a few years ago with about 700 other guys from Chicago, and several thousand across the country. I'm wondering how many more are out there and what kind of work you're doing now? Have any of you been recalled back? As for myself I'm a "babysitter" for a midsize family run business. I have to deal with things like making sure an employee has his handset plugged into his phone or making sure the computer is turned on... Or my personal favorite is when i have to tell an employee to take the book off his keyboard when he's freaking out about the mysterious "9" running across his monitor. I don't know about the rest but I'd cut off a toe or two to get back out into the field

Joe, I personally have not worked with Bellsouth but have made a lot of friends through the years that have. Most around here took early outs with a pretty good lump sum do to the amount of years of service. Bell even hired a couple on a contract basis and was making more than they were (go figure). A couple friends that were in cable repair are now doing telephone installs and repairs for a couple of different hospitals here. Another that ran high cap circuits with the data group, is now doing the same thing for Century Tel. Bellsouth has in the last couple of years started hiring newbie’s off the street here for the first time in about 15 years.
