In the handbook, under Appendix E - System Capacity and Parameters, there is a section "Hardware Capacity". In the table found there, you should see that 12 ASUs are the system capacity for the MXe. The number of 12 would only be achieved by adding additional "RJ45" ports to the system. FYI, the "RJ45" ports are CIM ports (copper interface module). So, if you have 4 already on the system that are currently unused, then you can add 4 ASUs without adding more CIM ports to the system.
Also, there are a few different types of ASUs. The new ones are ASU IIs. The analog circuits on these units need analog device licenses to work. If you get the old ASU then you do not require licenses (I think - pretty sure - talk to a Mitel sales rep).
As for digital sets, they are the past. The future is IP and that is where every phone manufacturer is focusing development money. Mitel does make the old digital sets compatible on the 3300 via the peripheral node. Mitel is not making digital sets, or at least they are not developing new models, so why put a focus on making a DSU that was never a part of the old product line. Sorry, that's the way it is with pretty much any new phone system.
