I have a customer that uses all 5420s, aprrox 18 sets, and avaya had to create a custom build for them to work properly. The issue we were having was when all the phones in a hunt group would ring it would bring the IPO to its knees. I know there once was a limitation to the amount of 5420s one could use in 3.1.xx. My question is, has this limitation been increased in 3.2 or 4.0 ? I am having a hard time finding a specs doc on this limitation. Thanks for any insight into this issue.

I know of no limit regarding amounts of 5420's on an IPO.

I would be interested to know where exactly you got that info.

083: Support of Avaya 4424 Terminals
19th August 2005 - Full PDF Text Version

As previously stated in our documentation, there is a limit to the number of 4424 terminals that can be supported on an IP Office Digital Station 30 (DS30) Expansion Module due to the power requirements of these terminals.

Until recently, an 80 Watt power supply unit was available as a special order item for customers wishing to use more than 10 of these terminals on a DS30 module. Unfortunately, this power supply unit has been discontinued and is no longer available.

As a result of this, the maximum number of 4424 terminals supported by IP Office DS modules is now as follows:

Up to 10 x 4424 terminals are supported on a DS module when using the standard power supply unit provided with each module. The remaining ports may also have other supported 4400 series terminals connected and in use.

Customers seeking to connect more than 10 x 4424 terminals should employ multiple DS modules, while bearing in mind the constraint above.

It should be noted that no such limits apply to 5400 series terminals (including the 5420 terminal); up to 30 x 5420 terminals are supported per DS30 module, up to 16 x 5420 terminals are supported per DS16 module.

Are the only 18 sets total for the system or just 18 5420's?

similar to what kholladay posted here is a more recent tech tip from Avaya...though it doesn't necessarily seem to fit your situation.

Post a list of your hardware and software version for each.

Support of Avaya IP Office Digital Station 30 Module Version 2 (DS30V2) with 60 Watt Power Supply

An issue has been experienced in the field where a DS30V2 module may constantly reboot when heavily populated with compatible digital telephones.
There is a limit to the number of telephones that can be supported on an IP Office DS30V2 Expansion Module using the current 60 Watt Power Supply packaged with the unit. Upon initial power up of the DS30V2 module it is recommended not more than 27 telephones of any type be connected. If more than 27 telephones are connected to a single DS30V2 the new modified Power Supply is recommended.
Not using the modified 60 Watt Power Supply may cause the DS30V2 to enter a state of constant reboot, which can be cleared by powering the unit down and reducing the number of terminals to bring the count to 27 or less.
The modified 60 Watt PSU can be identified by a different 13 digit code (46YPW0002UKAE). The modified PSU will be available under IP400 PSU POWERSOLVE 24V 2.5A EARTHED KIT (Comcode 700357387) PCS 1.1.

you are saying that it is "bringing the system to its knees", what does that mean and how did you determine that??? Are you looking in SSA?

Just like KHOLLADAY stated

"It should be noted that no such limits apply to 5400 series terminals (including the 5420 terminal); up to 30 x 5420 terminals are supported per DS30 module, up to 16 x 5420 terminals are supported per DS16 module."

that says that there is no max for the 5420s.
