How long should I wait for the network resources to become available?

OK... I have a small XPpro-based network with 5 PC's.

Ethernet 100 through a Lynksys Switch.

One of the PC's (Gateway) is the File Server. The same PC shares it's internet connection with the LAN (hence Gateway).

The internet connection is an IDSL 144/144 through a Netopia 4652-T Router. 'Gateway' uses a second NIC to attach to the router.

'Gateway' has the XP Internet Connection Firewall enabled.

All the PC's on the LAN can access each other.

All the PC's on the LAN can access the Internet.

I can make a VPN tunnel through the firewall to 'Gateway' from the outside.

I can't see ANYTHING on the LAN. I have checked my Shares and I can't find anything wrong.

I looked in the forum and someone mentioned waiting up to 15 minutes for the list of resources to become available.

Is this true?

Why?

What can I do to speed it up?

Is there anything in my hardware arrangement that could be causing problems? (2 NICs in 'Gateway' for example).

Thank you for your attention.

Further to this...

I tried to enable netbios on TCP\IP and the LAN failed.

I have 'Gateway' assigning IP stuff for incoming connections.

A search of the network for 'Gateway' shows the PC but no resources on it.

I read something about the LAN details being on the LAN but skipping the VPN connection, perhaps because the LAN is bridged?

Further to that...

That answer seems to be that both the client and server were 192.168.0.1

So how do I change the IP of my NIC from 0.1 to 1.0?
