I know you can set the netmask through -

1. /etc/netmasks
2. NIS
3. Manually through ifconfig

How else can it be set ?

On of my Solaris 8 boxes I see the netmask is set to 255.0.0.0 Class A (ifconfig shows netmask ff000000)

on my /etc/netmasks file I'm using class C (255.255.255.0), nsswitch.conf is configured for file NIS for netmasks

Yet when I reboot the box comes up with a Class A netmask.

If I change it manually I lose connectivity.

Apart from the above, it is also set via a system build/upgrade, that's where we normally configure, but that's not your problem. I can't think of any other methods though. Can you post your /etc/netmasks entry, might also be worth deleting the line and reinserting it.

This is one of our /etc/netmasks
102.125.27.0 255.255.255.128

ifconfig -a
...........

inet 102.125.27.56 netmask ffffff80 broadcast 102.125.27.127

/etc/netmasks

10.183.204.0 255.255.255.0

inet 10.181.204.140 netmask ff000000 broadcast 10.255.255.255

Also, if I set the netmask manually to 255.255.255.0 I lose connectivity, when I set it back to 255.0.0.0 I can connect again.

Change the entry in [tt]/etc/netmasks[/tt] to...
Code:
10.18[b]1[/b].204.0 255.255.255.0
...then reboot. You aren't listing a network for your IP in your [tt]/etc/netmasks[/tt] file.

I feel like a moron.. that was it Sam.. instead of 181 I put in 183.. duh.

Thanks!
