Does anyone have a recomendation for the way a fax machine should be setup on a Partner ACS R7 processor and messaging release 7 system?

my help guide gave me this advice:
Do not assign a Fax extension to an Automated Attendant if you are using the PARTNER ACS Release 3.0 or later Fax CNG Detection feature.

Before the messaging module was added, we had line 3 be the dedicated fax line.

But now I'm under the impression that the Messaging system can detect fax call and route it to the designated fax extension that's specied in the voicemail/messaging module itself.

Am I understanding this correctly? Any information or guidance on your past setup configurations to shine some light on the issue is much appreciated!

Do you need to receive voice calls on the dediated fax line? If not, leave it alone.

The Partner ACS AND the Partner Messaging both have FAX detection built in. So there are two ways to program the same thing. You should use only one at a time, not both.

If you put the FAX extension in Hunt Group 8, calls answered by an Auto Attendant (on ANY voice mail) will be sreened for CNG tone, and if detected, the ACS will send the call to the group.

Or, you can specify a FAX receiver extension for each individual auto attendant.

So, if you had ABC company and XYZ company on the same system, with separate auto attendants, and with separate fax extensions, you would use the 2nd method to steer fax calls to the correct machine.

But I've found that method is more prone to voice frequencies being mis-interpeted and sending voice callers to the fax machine.

Slickest implementation was to use the 1st senario (fax machine in hunt group 8) so employees could call the FAX line to check voice mail messages. They would reach the AA and just dial *7 to log in. FAX callers would reach the AA as well, but the CNG would send them to the machine.

TouchToneTommy,

what you're saying makes sense. I never knew that's what hunt group 8 was for (I wonder how you manage to figure out these things out?).

But how would you do it from the Partner ACS side of things, just to contrast it with the Messaging configureation method?

One way to know and learn these things is to read the Partner documentation. You might be surprised what is in there!

Happy reading!
