How in the world can this pg rank 1 for a highly competitive keyword??

I just don't understand how this page can rank #1 - not for some odd keyword but for for a highly highly competitive keyword. It is a complete flash page...I just don't understand...any ideas? The url is

Hi Chris, thank you for your reply, actually this is not a new page, it has been here forever. The word is "m an ol o bl ah ni k" without the spaces(don't wanna help boost their ranking more by placing their link and their targeted keyword here.

correct me if I'm wrong, but google.com only returns 544 results for that word and the site you list is not in the top 10.

However.... Google CAN read content in Flash.
AND that site is something to do with Vogue, so it pretty high profile and may well get alot of traffic through from there.

Think Back Link Text.

Check backlinks to the page and it has anchor text to match the desired search. SEO 101. If you try hard enough you can make a blank page rank, and thats pretty much what they did.

When I search for the phrase I get: "Results 1 - 10 of about 374,000" Still not highly competitive though.

Yep, just checked. Sept 9th 2003 last modified.

I get 377,000 from the DC I am looking at for manolo blahnik.
Hardly highly competitive maybe moderately competitive with ~3,760 targeted pages, and most of those fall into the "accidental optimisation" bracket. So possibly even lower than moderately.

And Yes, Backlinks and anchor text are definitely the reason.
