How do I import a graphic (like a logo) so that it doesn't come in in a white box?
Also, can I import a logo which is embedded in a Word document?

Use File>Place

Navigate to where your file is, place it, make sure it's not open or it won't place. The logo should come in.

I strongly don't recommend using logos or any images that are inserted in a word file, the explanation is lengthy.

You can import a logo into InDesign that does not have a background, either having it as an Illustrator ai file with PDF compatability turned on, or an Illustrator eps.

You can also remove the background using photoshop and save it as a layered PSD file and import that and it will come in without a background.

Also, you can use the pen tool in photoshop to draw a clipping path around the logo. Then when it's imported to InDesign the clipping path is applied and the background won't be applied.

The other way, and it's very crude, is to do it in InDesign. When you import the image, use

Object>Clipping Path

And Choose Detect Edges and turn on the preview. Move both sliders to achieve the desired result. The clipping path can be edited with the pen tool in InDesign, by selecting the image with the white arrow tool, so you get the brown/orange frame. Then select the pen tool and edit it.

...additional note on eps files imported into indesign from illustrator is that they import with what appears to be a white background when viewing the page as default view, turn on view > overprint preview to how it would likely print...

...doing this initiates a high res preview of the whole document, do also note that this can slow up page navigation depending on complexity of document...

...also if importing an eps with transparency form illustrator, ensure illustrator has it's raster effects setting to high (300dpi) or higher. In the flattening options in the eps save dialogue ensure that is set to high also...
