One thing I've learnt over the years is, that in forum posting it pays to be pedantically precise. Simply because;

A: Somebody will misconstrue what you posted.

OR

B: Some smartars alec will take you to task over it :-D

Especially in this business where a character out of place can spell disaster! rm -rf / tmp/somejunk anyone?

Indeed, read twice, press return once is a good maxim! Also, be careful about simply copying and pasting commands made here and elsewhere into a live environment. They might look fine, but as in the case identified by Annihilannic above, could lead to you collecting your stuff from your desk as you leave!

Since this is a Linux forum, this cardinal rule bears repeating: operate with the least amount of privilege required. To put it more bluntly, DO NOT use root unless root is required. Similarly, unless there is no other way, don't allow direct root login; use a normal account and assume root. Better yet, properly setup SUDO.

In other Linux forums, it is absolutely unbelievable how many times you see that some idiot logs in directly as root and it leads to disaster. In addition to all the unintended consequences, this leads to many security vulnerabilities.

I do login to our servers as root, mainly because root is the only account allowed SSH access and I am the only one with the .ppk signatures.

Sooooo!

Should we now sit back and wait for the one person that actually pressed return after typing that in??? :-D

Instead of logging in via SSH as root, why not use a regular account, configure SSH to only allow login via that account, with key based authentication and then put a really good password on root for when you need it? Much more secure.
