How Hard to Customize CE?

Does anyone have a lot of experience customizing CE? I plan to customize the ePortfolio interface and perhaps the "Manage Users" portion of CMC. Crystal Decisions makes it appear that if you have experience with ASP, JS, & VBS (which I do), customization is easy, but I'd like to hear from real people out there in the trenches.

Please let me know what things ARE NOT VERY EASY, what things are NOT WORTH THE TIME, and what things are BUGGY. Any feedback is helpful!!

I did some of this with a BETA of CE 8.5 and it seemed to work fine, though many of their examples did not.

Just open up some of the sample code in the WEB Developers guide and have a look, it should seem very familiar.

Many of the fiels supplied to me by the CD staff failed, and I had a rough go at repairing them as I'm not a WEB developer, I'm a database monkey with some CR skilzzz...
