How good and how scalable is it?

I am a VB devloper looking at mysql as back end for a commercial app. It seems to be exactly the perfect alternative to MS SQL. But a word from the wise would be greatly appreciated..
-are max connections limited to 101 concurrent connections? what happens past this point, can you cluster them?
-from Vb is odbc the best,fastest connection method.

soon to be mysql fan.
