How does vault handle multiple streams backing up to disk?

We are running NBU 6.5.3. Most of the backups go to DSUs, and vault is setup to duplicate the disk backup images to tape, and immediately expire the images on disk. 2 of the backups are fairly large and are thusly broken up via data streams. My question/issue is that if one of the streams fails, it seems that the other 'good' streams remain on disk, creating 129 error for other backups. I am fairly new to this type of setup so I'm wondering if that is to be the expected behavior with vault, dsu, and multiple data streams.
