How does project uniquely id a resource?

I have a resource duplication issue between MSP 2003 and a product called Project Office by Pacific Edge using the Pacific Edge Connector.

I believe there's a problem with whatever ID is being used to identify MSP resources, and am wondering if anyone knows exactly how MSP uniquely ids each resource? Obviously the "ID" is useless, just rearrange your resources and the "ID" changes based on the order. <head shake>

Thanks!
C

You need the Task.UniqueID field.

(There are others, btw, such as Resource.UniqueID, Assignment.UniqueID, Predecessor.UniqueID, Successor.UniqueID -- I'm sure there are more; these are just from the top of my head.)

That the "ID" changes when things are sorted is absolutely expected. Sort a spreadsheet and the row number where data appears changes. The spreadsheet row number is an almost completely analagous equivalent to the Resource.ID or the Task.ID.

The answer to your problem may (in fact, almost certainly) lies in the fact that if you highlight a task and drag&drop it somewhere then the ID changes but the UniqueID does not. If, however, you cut&paste then both the ID and the UniqueID change. You can demonstrate this by opening any existing project, displaying the UniqueID column and then observing the contents of that column as you drag&drop vs cut&paste.

PDQBach,

Resource.UniqueID is what I wanted to know. So my question now is how do I view that value from within Project (if possible)?

I know full well the visible "ID" is nothing but a row number - my <head shake> was about the fact that Project even bothers to CALL it an "ID" when it's not. I'd like it to show me the Resource.UniqueID value - something useful.

Thanks,
C

Nevermind - I found it in the columns as Unique ID.

Thanks, C
