Im using LEGATO to archive and retreive files and directories which have been defined as imbedded soft links within a directory structure, by owners of such data. I would like to know what parameter(s) I need to include in my archive job, in order to archive these possibly hidden links. I will also need the correct parameters to reconstitute these links when restoring a previously archived set of data. I am working in a linux environment.

Thanks

EMC Networker performs a backup and restore of any symbolic links on Unix/Linux systems... the backup job runs as "root" on the client, so it has access to all files/directories.

Normally, symbolic links aren't hidden to a root-level user, thus the backup properly backs them up and restores them.

If the users have figured out some cunning way to hide these symbolic links from user "root", then it's likely they are not going to be backed up; if that is the case then it is time for some "user education".

Unless you are doing something special, most people just specify "All" in the client properties field called "Save set"... thus, all existing filesystems and symbolic links become part of the backup.

I should have also mentioned this:

If (for example) you are restoring an entire directory for a user "jones", e.g. restore of "/home/jones" - any symbolic links that exist in /home/jones will be restored automatically.

If you are doing a file-by-file select-n-choose restore, then you will need to make sure that you select the symbolic links that you want to restore - they will show up as a specific graphical icon when doing a restore using a GUI-based Networker restore client.
