Does any one have links, ideas and information on how Networker features compare to say Galaxy ? Netbackup, which one is your favorate and why, has any one switched from or to Networker and why ?
How does Networker Licenceing compare to others, how does Networker DR and SAN capability compare to other, reporting, media managment etc ?

I have experience on several different softwares. I can provide some pros and cons on these. These are of course solely IMHO. I'm working on very large environments, so pricing may be different on smaller cases.

We are mainly using Data Protector, TSM and Networker.

Data Protector (HP)

+Very cost effective
+Flexible licencing
+Best support and also cheap support programs
+Reporting as it should be.
+Easy to configure. Same applies also for software modules
+Automatic client deploy and update->installation server pushes client software to clients
+Very fast disksystem backups for HP XP disksystem
+Easy backup server DR
+Fast software updates from HP

-No additional disk backup feature
-SAN backups not the easiest to configure&maintain
-Limited support for DP server hardware(Only HP-UX, Win and Solaris)
-Limited support for software
-Tape drive usage(only one client/group can use device)

Tivoli Storage Manager (IBM)

+Almost every HW and SW supported
+Built in disk backups
+Good reporting
+Very good TSM server DR
+Cost effective software modules

-Oldish desing. Basic design from 70's
-You should really love the command line
-Needs plenty of tape devices
-Not very easy to setup & maintain(hierarchical architecture)
-Some hw & sw problems on other platforms than AIX/IBM
-Slow support

Veritas Netbackup

+Almost every HW and SW supported
+Basically every solution you can imagine is supported.
+Very flexible on large environments
+Other Veritas storage software integration

-Confucing licencing
-Pricey
-Not very easy to setup & maintain

I apprecate your comprehensive response, i am evaluating powersnap module for SAN backup of Clarion, in your openion what is the best backup software in such an enviroment.

Well I don't have the deep experience with Powersnap since we are now using Symmetrix which provide tools to do disk backups without those very expensive NW modules. Also we use IBM ESS disk systems which have very handy FlashCopy feature. These disk systems are more expensive than Clarion but they offer far better tools to do disk backups with no downtime and no additional NW/TSM licences are needed.

Once we had customer who had Clarion in their production environment with very large database. This was HP-UX based thing and then we tried to test the Powersnap module. Even EMC guys failed to get it work properly. This was something like 2-3 years ago so maybe Powersnap is now better product especially when Legato is now a prt of EMC. This customer switched to Symmetrix.

We are now only using Clarions as a ATA-disk based backup storage where clients will write their data and where data is cloned to tape.

Some corrections: Data Protector has the disk backup feature on version 5.5 and it is more intelligent than in Networker. Also SAN backups are easier to maintain as there is now device configuration with multiple device paths.
