I am using HP-UX 10.0.
DNS is configured in the system. Now the problem is, system does not read from /etc/hosts file. I need: if the host is not ound in DNS then it should search in the files "/etc/hosts", which is currntly not happening. I don't have /usr/nsswitch.conf file present in my stsrem.

Should I create it? If yes, HOW?
OR
Is there any other way to achieve the same?

Thanks,
Sambit.

hi ,

to use hosts if dns is not available you will have to create /etc/msswitch.conf file with entries in it like
hosts: dns [NOTFOUND=continue] files

One way to check this is , if possible mv /etc/resolv.conf
out the way and then try resolving your name it should use your hosts file.

Have a look at following link as well:-

What you are really talking about is /etc/nsswitch.conf.
It decides whether to look in the host, NIS, or DNS first, second, or third. There are several sample configs (nsswitch.*) on each HP-UX system.
