Hi,

Just a simple question:

How does automatic DNS work? does it get the DNS ip from DHCP?

The answer has been eluding me, being lost in a jumble of a million irrelevant hits for automatic and dns and work...

Cheers!

What do you mean by automatic DNS? You can have your DHCP server give out DNS server IPs when a client requests an IP address.

Thanks for the link. After searching through it for the word 'automatic', i now realise what a terrible question i asked.

To rephrase the question - When I set a workstation's DNS in TCP/IP properties to "Obtain DNS server address automatically", where does it get the address from?

Well, when a workstation is set to this, it will be assigned via DHCP - I presume there will be a static entry for the DNS server on whatever device is running DHCP, which is then allocated to hosts.

That is purely a logical guess mind so don't take it as gospel.
